[plus]Dzongs are Bhutanese buildings that combine the sacred and the secular, housing both local government offices and monasteries. The dzong in the capital city, Thimphu, stands on the site of earlier dzongs destroyed by earthquakes and fires. When the third king of Bhutan moved the country's capital to Thimphu he ordered the rebuilding of the dzong using traditional methods. These include using no plans or blueprints - only the mind of the architect - and using no nails in the construction.
Originally the dzong was home to the National Assembly but this now uses another building on the other side of the river bank.
Visitors - other than those with official business - can only visit the dzong after 5 pm in the evening or at weekends when the government working day is over. Be sure to use the entrance for the 'common' people and not the entrances restricted to monks and royalty. There is no fee to enter.
The dzong is used for ceremonies and major state events such as the 2008 coronation of the 5th King.
