[plus]Rugby Football was created in 1823 but it was not until 1997 that the statue of William Webb Ellis, the schoolboy credited with inspiring the game, was unveiled in the centre of Rugby, just outside the walls of Rugby School.
The statue was unveiled by England veteran Jeremy Guscott and created by sculptor Graham Ibbeson. The statue is modelled on Ibbeson's son and was paid for, at a cost of £40 000, by public subscription. The statue stands in a public space, requires no entry fee and can be viewed 24 hours per day.
