It features over 40 stores (with well known names such as Next and Marks and Spencer) and a number of eating places ranged around a central plaza. In it there is a small park with seating and a play area for children. To one side of the large car park is the new JJB Sports Store and Fitness Club. The Royal Quays has become popular with local people and, with the North Shields Ferry Terminal at the bottom of the street, visitors from Scandinavia.
