[plus]The horseshoe-shaped castle was built for prince-bishop Clemens August, bishop of Cologne from 1723-1761.
The castle was designed by Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun and built in between 1723 and 1740 on top of the former sites of a water fortress. The interior design was made by Francois de Cuvilliés who turned the castle into one of the most important examples of the French Baroque style in the Rhineland area of Germany.
Augustusburg is regarded as one of the masterpieces of early Rococo design and famous for its staircase, designed by Balthazar Neumann.
The castle is surrounded by a vast park and kept to the original design of garden designers Dominique Girard and Peter Josef Lenné who have created a baroque style garden and, a bit further afield, an English style garden and forest.
In recognition of the historical significance of Castle Augustusburg it has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1988.
